Laurell K. Hamilton

A writer of dark fantasy novels, Hamilton is well known for her "Anita Blake" series, set in an alternate US with vampires and werewolves. Her books feature strong female heroines, plenty of wise cracks and unflinchingly brutal fighting, and frequent sexual tension.

  • Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter

Hamilton has written a series combining some of the most entertaining elements of dark fantasy (vampires), hard-boiled detective stories and romance. Anita Blake is an animator in an alternate universe, almost identical to our own, except magic works, and the world includes vampires, werewolves, witches and zombies. The undead who attack humans can have death warrants issued against them.

Anita is an animator, a professional magician able to raize zombies. In addition, she is a part-time vampire executioner. She is tough, sarcastic, vindictive and compassionate. She also treasures her stuffed penguin.

The closest comparisons are Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone and Glen Cook's Garett.

    Other Books

Hamilton has also written Nightshade, a Star Trek novel, and Nightseer (review), a fantasy filled with elves, demons, gods and dragons, that shows both promise and inexperience.

She is working on a new "Fey" series featuring princess Meredith (Merry) Gentry. This series, unlike the Anita Blake one, will be close-ended, with 6-8 books (according to the 3/1999 issue of "News to Die for", the Laurell Hamilton newsletter). The first book, was published in November 2000, with the title A Kiss of Shadows (cover) This is a series about an alternate universe, where the Fey have always existed. There are both Seelie and Unseelie Courts, but most nations have never allowed the Unseelie Fey through their borders. Thomas Jefferson had sympathy for the magical race, and therefore the US has always had a liberal immigration policy.

Many years ago, both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts have migrated to USA. The Courts have been allocated their own land in Illinois, something like an Indian reservation within the federation. In two centuries, the Fey lands have become an international tourist attraction.

The book features princess Meredith, a relative of both royal families, who wants to have nothing to do with either Court. The series takes place in Cahokia, IL and Los Angeles. The second book is in progress and is titled A Caress of Twilight.
