Synopsis: After several dangerous accidents have afflicted the quasi-religious association of a charismatic woman activist, the young Mary Russell, Sherlock Holmes's apprentice, joins the temple to probe the occurances—and perhaps the divine insight of the leader.
Full Review: Mary, now 21 and at last independent in her means, acts independently in this investigation on behalf of her friend. Assisted by Holmes, she is challenged in the investigation by both the apparently criminal conspiracy, and the extraordinary insight the leader seems to have. While investigating, Mary faces challenges to her emotional stability, her religious convictions, as well as her physical existence, as her growing maturity changes the shape of her relationship with her mentor.
A consistently pleasant and satisfying continuation of the series, this book is likely to appeal to anyone who enjoyed the start of this series in The Beekeper's Apprentice.
