An excellent mystery, with a taut plot, solid characters, and a good protagonist, somewhat flawed by early telegraphed clues.

Synopsis: This is an unabridged recording of Hunting Season.

Anna Pigeon is a law enforcement ranger in the National Park Service. After several posts (described in earlier novels), Anna is a District anger on Natchez Trace, in Mississippi. As the senior law enforcement officer, she leads the investigation when a murdered man is found in a historic house. Clues abound, but no solid suspects appear. The investigation is not made easier by Anna's concern about her love affair with a county sheriff.

Full Review: This is one of the most enjoyable in the series of pleasant Pigeon mysteries. Anna continues to be an appealing protagonist, full of intelligence, cynicism, love of nature and dedication to duty. Her interaction with others, including the difficult members of her own small force, show Anna's strengths and weaknesses.

The solution is revealed slowly and steadily, but perhaps too obviously, since the reader suspects the villain much earlier than the paranoid and astute Anna.

While nagging, this frustration is not enough to mar this suspenseful, solidly plotted, and colorful mystery.

Overall: 6.5; Plot: 6.5; Characters: 6; Style: 5.5; World-building: 5.5; Originality: 5.5;
