Melodramatic and witty, this novel features a tight if a bit improbable plot, plenty of suspects, and some delightful characters.

Genre: Mystery

Synopsis: In pre-war England, the world of fashion and high society is a dangerous place with backbiting and stolen designs. However, murder is a bit too much even for that group. Of course, a couple of mysterious deaths may not be murders, but Albert Campion is very suspicious. Particularly when his sister Val is a suspect—if the death was really a murder.

Full Review: Like many other Campion mysteries, this book is both frothy and improbable. However, the colorful characters and witty interaction make this book an enjoyable froth, indeed.

Not suprisingly, some phrases and sentiments are quite dated, however, most of the wit and humor come through clearly, and the return of Amanda Fitton (see Fear Sign) is a delight.

Each character is slightly exaggerated, but full of interest and conflicting talents and desires, and there is the classical plethora of suspects.

This mystery is enjoyable, and is one of the better ones in the very satisfying Campion series.

Overall: 6; Plot: 6; Characters: 6; Style: 6; World-building: 6; Originality: 6;
