A worthy successor, this fantasy continues to feature likable characters, with even the adversaries sympathetically portrayed; strong magic, well-crafted politics, and occasionally strained plot.

Synopsis: In Fire Logic Karis, a rarely powerful Earth witch crippled by her past and her addiction to Smoke finally came into power as the appointed G'deon, the ruler of the conquerred land of Shaftal. Alas, to expel the brutal Sainnites from Shaftal requires making Shaftal into a warrior nation—something Karis is loath to do. But neither can she allow the land to suffer under the depredations of the occupiers.
The agonizing dilemma can be broken by a sacrifice. Will Karis lose her happiness to restore Shaftal?
Full Review: The characters in this vivid fantasy series are likable, and a feminist tone is worked in with subtlety and skill that prevent stridency. Not just the main characters such as Karis and fiery Zanja, but the supporting cast and even the enemies are portrayed with detail and sympathy.
The plot, particularly some obstacles, are awkward, appearing more as narrative devices than as natural limitations of the characters or societies. Nonetheless, the quality of characters' reactions to the obstacles result in an ultimately satisfying resolution in this skilled and enjoyable fantasy.
Overall: 6; Plot: 4.5; Characters: 6; Style: 6; World-building: 6.5; Originality: 5.5;
