More of a romantic suspense than true mystery, this novel features an exotic (and ephemeral) background, plenty of suspects, and a rather passive protagonist.

Synopsis: Victoria Caryll's future seems bleak and lonely in the England in the Fifties, with neither family nor romantic attachments. Her Aunt Emily's invitation to her estate in Kenya seems perfect—Kenya of vivid landscapes and happy childhood memories.

But while the landscape is still the same, the beautiful and dangerous country has changed. The memories of a deadly revolt a few years back are still fresh, and the colonial rule lies uneasy. More immediately, though, a young woman has been murdered on Aunt Emily's estate, and the police have just started the investigation.

Virginia's affection, as well her very existence are in danger.

Full Review: The book has an atmospheric feeling of the last years of the colonial rule in Kenya. The book has been written before Kenya's independence, so the winds of change are felt only in hindsight. One feels both inequities of colonialism and the nostalgia for it.

But for all the interesting background, it is generally treated rather lightly, if skillfully. Most of the book is focused on Virginia, and the cast of characters, all of whom are under strain and become more and more suspicious. The growing paranoia is well portrayed; however, Virginia seems too passive a narrator for true excitement. While making some effort to investigate, as well as resolve her romantic situation, for the most part she just reacts—engaging some sympathy but hardly respect.

A pleasant diversion, with an interesting background and some moments of suspense, but lacking true satisfaction due to the passive protagonist.

Overall: 5; Plot: 5; Characters: 5.5; Style: 6; World-building: 6; Originality: 5;
