Another tense installment of political intrigue and personal responsibility, this novel has the hallmark of likable heroine, good supporting cast, and interesting aliens.

Genre: Science Fiction (Mystery, Intrigue, Aliens)

Synopsis: Jani Kilian, the first human-idomeni hybrid, is under seige. Both her idomeni mentor, Tsecha, and Jani, are suffering from the reactionaries of both races that wish for anything other than closer contact advocated by Jani.

The bigots on both sides are powerful, and their plots soon turn deadly. In the meantime, Jani is tempted off Earth by the strongest temptation: those who need her. Could this mission provide something Jani also needs, or does it hide more danger?

Full Review: Jani keeps growing up. As her health problems subside (or she begins to compensate for them), her political influence grows. Unable to tackle some forces, she becomes skilled in choosing her battles. And sure enough, her brand of honor, skill, and ability to influence people make her a leader among those with least power—not without cost.

Jani is an interesting character, and her growth makes for exciting reading. The political developments are always complex and dangerous, but plausible. While seemingly thick and concluding a number of subplots, the book calls out for more of the story of Jani, her friends and temporary allies. One hopes that the next sequel will be coming soon.

Overall: 6.5; Plot: 6; Characters: 6.5; Style: 6; World-building: 6.5; Originality: 6;
