Enjoyable characters and an interesting background work well with a competent murder mystery.

Genre: Mystery (Police Procedural)

Synopsis: Alexandra Cooper, an attorney in the Manhattan DA office, investigates and unusual crime when a well-preserved body is found in an Egyptian sarcophagus being shipped from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Unfortunately for all concerned, the body is months rather than millenia old, and the resulting investigation is complicated by the wonders and rivalries in the two great New York museums.

Full Review: Alexandra Cooper, and her colleagues in the law enforcement make an attractive and interesting core of this otherwise average police procedural. The reactions and development of the characters, including some of the secondary ones, are handled well. A major portion of the plot is the surroundings, as the attorney and the detectives explore the overwhelming wonders of Met and its rival across the park the Natural History Museum.

The final conclusion is tense if not particularly fascinating, but the satisfaction of the puzzle solved, and fascinating characters make one seek out other books in the series.

Overall: 6; Plot: 6; Characters: 6; Style: 5.5; World-building: 6; Originality: 6;
