Synopsis: In the far future, the advanced technology has transformed the world and humans, without changing the human ambition. The Solar System is full of engineered humans, from warrior-women of Mars to the water-loving servant class of kappas on Earth. Even more extreme, remnants of old terraforming nanotech have integrated human cells and some human instincts into the very ground—very dangerous ground—of Mars.
In the meantime, a new power is taking shape. The secretive, remote colony of Nightshade, after generations of tryng to grow perfect humans, suddenly became the source of haunt-tech, a technology which even in the far future seems magical. From FTL tunnels, to resurrection of the spirits of the dead, to rewiring adult human minds, the haunt-tech is altering the balance of power. But what is the new goal of Nightshade?
Among the teeming masses of poor, ancient Earth, a young girl has been incubated by two reclusive old women. According to rumors, the girl can stop Nightshade and its sinister plans. But will Nightshade stop the girl first?
Full Review: the story of Lunae, the young girl burdened by prophecy and enemies, and her guardians, is often overshadowed by the colorful, decadent environment of transformed humanity. The background is not overly scientific, with advanced technology resembling magic more than consistent engineering.
The viewpoint switches frequently, and this is sometimes distracting, as well as detracting from character-building. Still, the rich, colorful setting, and the fast pace towards the end of the book result in a generally enjoyable read.
Overall: 5.5; Plot: 5; Characters: 5.5; Style: 5.5; World-building: 6; Originality: 6;
