A historical mileau provides a fresh background for this competent but unexceptional mystery with a likable but occasionally overbearing protagonist, set amid a slew of suspicious characters.

Synopsis: In Sixth Century Ireland the young Sister Fidelma carries the prestige of a fine education and a growing reputation as a Brehon, a judge, skilled in investigation of crimes. When she embarks on a ship bound for a famous shrine, her fellow passengers seem like an ill-assorted pilgrim party. When one of them is washed overboard, Fidelma becomes convinced that someone in the closed world of the ship is a murderer. Her investigation is both complex and perilous, not the least because her old lover is one of the party.
